Periodontitis affects around 75 % of the population aged of 35 and over.
Periodontitis is caused by bacteria that settle in the space between the teeth and the gums. Unless these bacterial settlements are removed by brushing or flossing, they lead to the buildup of hard tartar under the gums on the dental root. If untreated, this can lead to loss of the affected tooth.
The disease does not cause any pain and is usually only detectable by special probing methods or X-ray.

Patients suffering from diabetes, rheumatism and cardiac disease as well as pregnant women are particularly at risk of being affected. Additional environmental risk factors include smoking, stress, a lack of oral hygiene and a weakened or suprressed immune system.
Periodontitis requires systematic treatment. Good experiences have been collected using Emdogain, which is used to stimulate re-growth of bones to preserve the affected teeth.
